(Tom Olzak) In Part 1 of this two part series, I examined security challenges facing organizations that use spreadsheets to process or track sensitive information. I also introduced a modified SDLC to manage development and versioning of spreadsheet format and calculations. In Part 2, I look at two approaches to control information access and formula or macro modification. Because Microsoft Excel running on Microsoft Windows XP is the most common spreadsheet implementation, I use it as the example environment in this article. Using the security functionality of both the operating system (OS) and the application is the first approach we'll examine. |
